World Of WarCraft Is One Big Country

August 14, 2007 – 11:02 am

If it were a country, and not a game, then World of WarCraft would be the 90th biggest one in the world. The game has now exceeded its’ 9 millionth subscriber.

Oh yeah, thanks to Videogamesblogger.com for this idea: If you plot World of Warcraft on the CIA’s World Factbook list of countries by population, Blizzard’s aggregate subscriber list across all servers places it as the 90th most populous country on Earth (of 237 listed), i.e. bigger than Haiti, Austria, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Israel, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Ireland, and so on.

That’s a lot of people plugged in and playing. Plus, if it were a country, I bet it would be very well armed.

Having Troubles With Voice After Vista Upgrade? Quick Fix

August 13, 2007 – 6:44 am

Computers can be quirky sometimes, and if you recently upgraded your operating system to Windows Vista and are having troubles with your microphone, here is a quick fix!

Locate your World of Warcraft program file, right-click on it, and then click “Properties” on the drop-down menu that would pop up.

From the Properties window, click on the “Compatibility” tab. You’ll see that there’s a checkbox option to run the selected program in Compatibility Mode. Check that, and then you’ll be able to select an OS from the drop-down menu for Vista to run World of Warcraft on. In this case, select Windows XP SP2. Click Apply, then OK.

I hope that this will help improve your games performance until an official patch is released.

Speed Up Your Game With Raxco Disk Degramenter

August 9, 2007 – 6:57 am

Are you tired of getting slowed down when you’re playing World of Warcraft? Sick of a frozen screen when you’re about to advance to the next playing level?

Then you might want to check out Raxco’s new disk defragmenter software that will optimize your computer, allowing you to step up your game.

According to Blizzard Entertainment, the user base for World of Warcraft has reached 9 million players worldwide. These 9 million players are always on the lookout for ways to tweak their games and improve performance, whether through hardware or software.

One particularly difficult problem is WoW’s MPQ files, which include data, graphics, sound and more. These MPQ files are very large and are updated regularly. When they are updated, they often fragment, which causes lagging and hangs during interactive game play. A common solution for WoW players is to use PerfectDisk to defragment the entire drive, including the MPQ files.

Make Love, Not Warcraft

August 7, 2007 – 4:52 pm

Fans of South Park and World of Warcraft can rest easy, knowing that the two have been combined on a new DVD.

But Blizzard was in on the joke the whole time, assisting the producers with the creation of the machinima for the episode, which was recently nominated for an Emmy. Now that the DVD release of South Park: The Complete Tenth Season is on the horizon, Comedy Central will be repaying its debt of gratitude by including a World of Warcraft DVD-ROM with a 14-day trial in the set. How’s that for corporate synergy?

The three-disc set (not including the WoW trial) contains all 14 episodes from the 10th season of South Park, including other favorites like “ManBearPig” and “Tsst,” and mini-commentaries on every episode. South Park: The Complete Tenth Season will be available on August 21st at a suggested retail price of $49.99.

Now you can have both at the same time.

World Of Warcraft Movie Slated For 2009

August 5, 2007 – 7:29 am

If you’re like millions of others, then you just can’t get enough of World of Warcraft. Now you can expect a feature movie, to be released by the year 2009. The movie was announced at Blizzcon 2007. Expect the best in special effects and major talent, give that the movie will have a budget exceeding $100 million.

The plot for the film will take place approximately a year before the start of World of Warcraft, including races you have played and lands you have wandered in, where lots of plot arcs are melded into a two and a half hour story. The film itself will revolve around a ‘badass’ new hero, with a theme towards conflict and culture - being a War Movie rather than a quest movie, from an Alliance’s perspective.

“It’s actually not like the great adventure. It’s not so much a quest movie. It’s more of a war movie. Well, okay, it’s absolutely a war movie. Cultures grinding up to a horrible moment where it just all spills over and gets out of control. Less of an adventure party quest-type situation. More of an armies building to an inevitable conclusion type situation.”

There’s no director named for the project yet, but it was revealed that they would go for a PG-13 rating. The movie promises to make the game even more popular than before.

World Of Warcraft Used To Train Terrorists

August 3, 2007 – 9:41 am

At least that’s the claim of Kevin Zuccato, who heads the Australian High Tech Crime Centre. He says that terrorists cut their teeth on RPGs like WOW.

According to Kevin Zuccato, head of the Australian High Tech Crime Centre, terrorists are being trained in games such as World of Warcraft to scout out simulated real-world environments, and train in weapons that are “identical to real-world armaments.”

Zuccato told an Australian Security Industry Association conference that terrorists no longer have to travel to the target they want to attack to carry out reconnaissance, but create a virtual replica and rehearse an entire attack online. Bad news if you live the Tower of Azora then.

“We need to start thinking about living, working and protecting two worlds and two realities,” Zuccato said.

Now there’s one more detail for intrepid gamers to concern themselves with.
